When guests visit UP On The Roof, the popular rooftop restaurant at the Embassy Suites in downtown Greenville, they are enjoying one of the best views in the city. Behind that great experience is a heavy-duty commercial roofing system engineered to protect the hotel below, topped with a custom outdoor paver patio built specifically for restaurant dining above. Here is how our team completed this full commercial transformation.
Complete Tear-Off & Deck Prep
- We removed all existing rooftop pavers and tore off the old roofing material completely down to the bare concrete deck.
- The bare concrete substrate was thoroughly cleaned and inspected to guarantee a sound foundation for the hotel’s new commercial waterproofing system.
Building the Commercial Waterproofing System
- We installed custom-engineered tapered insulation sloped at 1/4-inch per foot. This creates a subtle slope that guides rainwater straight into the roof drains, eliminating standing water puddles.
- A 1/2-inch, fully adhered HD ISO (high-density Polyiso) coverboard was placed on top of the insulation. This board acts as a hard protective shield against punctures and heavy weight.
- To provide complete waterproof protection for the hotel building, we laid down a thick 80-mil Carlisle white TPO (Thermoplastic Polyolefin) single-ply roof membrane. The membrane was fully adhered with all seams hot-air welded together to form a seamless skin.
- All roof drains, pipes, scuppers, and perimeter curbs were hand-wrapped and sealed using specialized TPO flashings and heavy-gauge stainless steel edge metal.
The Floating Paver System
- Before placing heavy materials over the new TPO roof, we laid down protective 60-mil TPO slip sheets and 12×12-inch base plates to prevent damage.
- We set up raised, adjustable Bison Paver Pedestals across the space. We chose Bison for their top-tier pedestal systems that allow rainwater to flow freely underneath to the hotel roof drains while creating a rock-solid, level walking surface above.
- We installed approximately 5,100 square feet of 24×24-inch Hanover Prest concrete pavers to build the outdoor patio floor for UP On The Roof. The layout features a stylish two-color checkerboard pattern inside a clean perimeter border.
Custom Finishing Details
- Custom 16-gauge stainless steel edge trim was formed and installed along the wall transitions to securely lock the outer paver edges in place.
- Rotting wood blocking around the building columns was removed and replaced with low-maintenance composite trim boards.
- We built 30 custom rolling planter bases equipped with 2-inch stainless steel wheels and composite trim so restaurant staff can easily reconfigure their outdoor space.
- The completed paver floor was coated with two layers of PROSOCO Saltguard, a silane/siloxane sealer that repels water, resists salt damage, and protects against food spills.
