Our team recently wrapped up a commercial gutter replacement for a facility in Flat Rock, North Carolina. Here is a look at exactly how we executed this project from prep to peak performance, and why the details matter.
Safety, Logistics, and Peace of Mind

- We kicked things off with a pre-construction meeting with the client to map out the staging areas, equipment setup, appropriate work hours, and safety protocols. This ensures minimal disruption to daily business operations.
With the ground rules established and the dumpster area secured, it was time to tear off the old, failing system and get to work.
Upgrading to Smart-Engineered Box Gutters
We removed and disposed of the old gutters to make way for 300 linear feet of new 7-inch Box gutters along both sides of the roof system.
However, not all commercial gutters are created equal. Here are two critical best practices we engineered into this Flat Rock project:
1. The 1.5-Inch Safety Margin
Standard gutters often fail when water backs up and spills over the rear edge, rotting the building’s fascia and structure. To prevent this, WNC Roofing installs gutters with backs that are 1.5 inches taller than the front faces. If the gutter ever overflows during a torrential downpour, the water is forced to spill harmlessly over the front and away from the building.
2. Guarding Against Thermal Expansion
Metal moves. In fact, gutters can expand and contract up to 1 inch for every 100 feet of length due to seasonal Carolina temperature changes. To prevent the metal from buckling, tearing, or cracking, we installed heavy-duty expansion joints every 50 feet.
Heavy-Duty Downspouts and Rock-Solid Anchoring
A massive gutter is useless if it cannot shed water quickly or stay attached during a storm.
- We installed up to 100 specialized gutter hangers. This specific spacing makes sure that the roof coating to be applied later will adhere flawlessly.
- We replaced 200 linear feet of old downspouts with massive 4”x5” commercial downspouts.
- To ensure these downspouts do not budge due to wind or heavy downpours, we secured them with heavy-duty support brackets spaced every 5 feet on center (O.C.).
The Final Walkthrough
Once the installation was complete and the site was cleaned, we performed a final walkthrough with the owners of the business. We inspected the pitch, the joints, and the downspouts together to ensure total satisfaction.
